The Heart and Importance of Bluffing
Deception is the curse of a game as whimsical as poker. In fact, its outright required as many experts on the game say that if you just play by the cards dealt to you, you'll never win - barring of course, a long and thoroughly unlikely string of good luck. Bluffing in essence, is lying to your opponent with your chips. This means that you're telling them, with those chips, that you've got something better than what you actually have.
Bluffing remains a vital aspect of any poker game as understanding the basics. If luck weren't so large a factor when it came to the cards, bluffing wouldn't be necessary. If there was a way to reliably get the cards you need, bluffing would be pointless, in fact - but each poker player knows that those aces won't come out all the time. A poker player has better odds looking at the player across the table and figuring out what they've got going for them. This does not, of course, mean that you should ignore the fundamentals, like pot odds and the like. This is simply stating what is rarely obeyed - that people matter just as much.
As any player knows, there are two ways of bringing home that big pot - to be the last player standing or to have the best hand among the players who are still in contention or to have a showdown. A showdown occurs after the last round of betting and is where cards are revealed to compare and contrast ranks.
The showdown in poker is pretty much the only time you should show your cards, both for etiquette and game play. The pot of course, goes to the person with the superior and best combination of cards. Due to the nature of the game, unless a player has other information like in the case of community card games, it is likely that the true strength of their hand will only come out during the showdown. This invariably increase the value of bluffing, as making people fold is a more consistent and reliable way of winning the pot.
Poker has always been more than getting the right cards but due to the numerous new and effective methods of disseminating information there has never been a wider understanding of that fact. Among other reasons, this is responsible for the slew of new players entering the professional field. Don't fall behind the curve - learn how to bluff.
